Whoop gives you one closed score. Thier shows the math.
Whoop's Recovery Score is closed. Strain is closed. Sleep Performance is closed. You can't read the formula. You can't audit the thresholds. You can't push back on a coefficient. You can only trust the brand.
Thier published the math first. 13 domains, 100+ peer-reviewed coefficients, every one line-anchored to a paper at thier.app/science. Reads from any wearable that writes to HealthKit - Whoop included. £79/year vs £270/year.
A "wellness score" you can't audit isn't a score.
Whoop has a Recovery Score. Oura has Readiness. Apple Health has Vitals. Eight Sleep has Sleep Fitness. None of them are open. Every one is a black box dressed in a brand colour.
Closed scores can't be argued with - which sounds clean, but means they can't be improved by anyone outside the company that owns them. The way wellness algorithms get better is the way medical algorithms got better: published, scrutinised, criticised, updated.
We published Thier's math first. The Science page shipped before the App Store listing did.
Whoop vs Thier - the trade-off in one table.
Whoop is excellent hardware with a closed software layer. Thier is a software layer that reads from any wearable. The structural difference is the entire pitch.
| Capability | Whoop | Thier |
|---|---|---|
| Wearable hardware | Yes - Whoop band | Reads any HealthKit-compatible wearable |
| Recovery score | Yes - closed formula | Yes - 100+ peer-reviewed coefficients, all published |
| Strain / training-load score | Yes - closed | Yes - open math, integrates Strava + Garmin training load |
| Sleep score | Yes - closed | Yes - sleep is one of 13 published domains |
| 13-domain bio age | No | Yes - physiological-age model |
| Lab-value interpretation | No | Built-in lab inference |
| Genetic / polygenic risk overlay | No | 23andMe / AncestryDNA upload |
| Daily protocol | No | Adaptive daily move + checklist |
| AI Longevity Coach with memory | No | Yes - full conversation memory of your data |
| Open / published math | Closed | thier.app/science - every coefficient cited |
| Annual price | £270 (12-month membership) | £79 - 70% cheaper |
| Hardware lock-in | Yes - band required | No - keep the wearable you already own |
| Verdict | Premium hardware, closed software | Open software on top of any hardware |
Whoop pricing reflects 12-month membership in May 2026. Comparison is structural, not pejorative - Whoop hardware is excellent.
Two paths, depending on your stack.
Cancel the £270/year membership. Keep the band.
The band still works as a heart-rate strap and writes to HealthKit. Thier reads from HealthKit. Most beta users with Whoops did exactly this - kept the hardware as a data source, dropped the subscription, replaced the daily-open habit with Thier.
Saves £190/year vs running both subs. Math is at /science.
Apple Watch + Oura + Thier > Whoop standalone.
An Apple Watch (sleep + heart rate + activity) plus an Oura ring (HRV + sleep + readiness) plus Thier (the layer above) is a richer stack than Whoop standalone - and the OAuth integrations are open, not locked.
Stack cost: ~£500 once + £79/year. Whoop subscription: £270/year forever.
"I wore a Whoop for three years. The Recovery Score told me a number every morning. I had to take it on faith. The day I read Thier's Science page and saw every coefficient anchored to a paper, I cancelled my Whoop membership. Same band, half the cost, and now I can argue with the model."
Beta user since March 2026
Keep the band. Cancel the subscription.
Install Thier
iPhone, iOS 17+. Universal-link supported, the rest happens in-app.
Connect Apple Health
One tap. HealthKit reads from your Whoop band; Thier reads from HealthKit.
Connect any other wearables
Oura, Garmin, Polar, Withings, Fitbit, Strava - all OAuth, all 30 seconds each.
Cancel your Whoop membership
Whoop's site → Subscription → Cancel. The band keeps working as a HealthKit data source.

Bio age, today's move, daily protocol. Same data sources. Different stance. £190/year saved.
For Whoop members switching.
Does my Whoop band still work after I cancel the membership?
Yes - as a heart-rate strap that writes to HealthKit. The Whoop app's scoring features stop working, but the raw heart-rate stream stays available to anything that reads HealthKit. Thier reads HealthKit.
Will I lose features by switching?
You lose Whoop's coaching surface (Strain Coach, Recovery feed). You gain a 13-domain bio-age model with the math published, an AI Longevity Coach with memory of your data, and a daily protocol that adapts. The trade is software-for-software, not hardware-for-software.
What if I don't have a Whoop band?
Even better. Apple Watch + Oura + Thier is a richer stack than Whoop standalone, at lower cost over time.
Why is Thier so much cheaper?
Whoop's price covers hardware-as-a-service. Thier is software-only. We don't ship hardware, don't pay band-replacement costs, don't subsidise device CAC.
How do you compute the bio-age coefficients?
Every coefficient is sourced from a peer-reviewed paper. The full mapping is at thier.app/science - direction (up/down), magnitude, threshold band, citation. The Science page is the source of truth.
